Red Cart Coffee Story

Hi  there,

Thanks for taking the time to view our web site.

This is the story of Rob and Janette and their journey to commercial Espresso Coffee production.

‘Red Cart Coffee’ grew from our  passion built over many years for Espresso Coffee.

We owned and operated a Bed and Breakfast in Whitianga, New Zealand and after several guests expressed a desire for an “Espresso” with their breakfast or Morning Tea  we purchased a domestic Espresso machine.

The learning curve was hilarious. (Rob is not one to read a manual unless he’s really stuck!) We quickly discovered that coffee grounds  (We didn’t have a grinder) can scatter themselves to all parts of the kitchen, especially when the machine  ‘blows-up’ a couple of times (Coffee sneeze) and then Peter (a guest) also blew it up!

The coffee improved, became quite drinkable and we began experimenting with different roasts etc.

Frothing (extending) the milk was ‘hit and miss’! Some of this we blame on the small machine but mostly the technique was learned by practice.

Our first grinder destroyed a few kilo’s of beans until the correct settings were learned by trial and error and remembered. Rob took it apart to clean it and forgot the settings, so had to start again!

The guest Peter shifted nearby  and many hours were spent over the ensuing years, comparing Espresso machines, grinders and of course coffee beans and roasts as we sipped our latest brew.

The Espresso Machines grew with our knowledge  – two domestic machines now loved by family members, a manual ‘ELECTRA”          Elektra

and now a 2 group commercial machine with it’s own trailer!!

We bought an old food cart off  ‘Trade me’ and spent many happy hours gutting and stripping it back to a shell.

Then we rebuilt it to our own design!

So we ended up with a very efficient and pleasant place to work
